ABANSW champions the unique design possibilities of forging steel to bring this ancient craft into a distinctly contemporary artistic context.

We aim to deepen and develop the subtleties of form, texture, and tone that forging processes excel so as to support inspiring and meaningful work from Australian blacksmiths. We celebrate the skill, originality, and diversity of forged metal practice and the exceptional works being produced across the field today.

While blacksmithing itself has several millennia of history, the expressive and sculptural use of forged metal has emerged as one of the most compelling directions in contemporary practice.

Since 2014 ABANSW has brought the best of contemporary blacksmithing to audiences across regional NSW through a series of curated exhibitions. Each event has grown in ambition, reach and reputation from our first group show to the nationally recognised 2023 National Blacksmiths Survey Exhibition at The Glasshouse Regional Gallery, Port Macquarie.

Our exhibitions bring together the full breadth of what artist blacksmiths are making right now, in one space, for everyone to see.

Next: Antipodean Ferrarius 2027 -  exhibition, collaborative sculpture and symposium. The Glasshouse Regional Gallery, Port Macquarie, November 2027.
